Woomera Village

Woomera Village

Woomera Village is situated in the south-east corner of the WPA and serves as the support and residential base for activities on the Range. No township existed before the establishment of the Range in 1947 and during a period of high activity in the 1960s, the town population peaked to over 6,000 people. Woomera Village was a restricted entry town, closed to the outside world for most of its life. The barrier fell in 1982 and today, Woomera is open to the public, welcoming a steady stream of Range users and tourists. Currently, Woomera has a population of approximately 200 people.

Facilities and services in Woomera Village are comprehensive and include a range of accommodation options, shopping centre, community hospital, police station, school, library and recreational facilities. The Woomera Heritage Centre, Visitor Information Centre is the first stop for visitors, and houses the Visitor Information Centre, Heritage Museum and Outback Diner.

Woomera Emergency Services located in the centre of Woomera Village provides a highly responsive capability, covering Ambulance, Fire and Rescue. Medical support is also available through the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

Communications services in Woomera Village include a fibre optic link to the public telephone and high-speed data networks, a digital cellular telephone system (GSM and CDMA), and locally broadcast television and radio stations.
