Woomera Airfield

Woomera Airfield

Hangars and Technical Area

Hangar 1

Woomera Airfield is located 6 km to the north of Woomera Village and is used for civil and military activities.

The main sealed runway measures 2372 x 45 metres and is capable of handling aircraft ranging from F/A-18s and F-111s to heavy lift aircraft such as the C-5A, C-17 and B-747. The runway is equipped with lighting and has provision to install an arrestor cable system for military aircraft use. Inspection of the runway and removal of any Foreign Object Debris (FOD) occurs on a daily or more frequent basis as required.

Three large hangars with a combined area of 9,000 square metres are available, together with a control tower and civil passenger terminal. Ordnance loading areas equipped with certified grounding points are also available.

Services provided at the airfield include control of aircraft movements, aircraft re-fuelling and loading/unloading operations. 24 hour security and on-site emergency services can be arranged when required. A light engineering workshop is located in close proximity to the airfield.

In addition to supporting weapon release and other aircraft trials in the WTF, Woomera Airfield is used for small and large Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) trials. High-speed testing of prototype automobiles is also conducted on the main runway.

Detailed information concerning Woomera Airfield including communications frequencies and navaid information can be found in the En Route Supplement Australia (ERSA). Approval to land at the airfield must be obtained at least 24 hours in advance as per the ERSA instructions.
