Woomera
Woomera is an Australian icon. It is synonymous with the testing of long range missiles and rockets during the Cold War, and the launch and tracking of spacecraft in the early days of the Space Age.
Today, the Woomera Test Facility in South Australia is a strategic defence asset used mainly for aerospace test and evaluation activities. It remains the largest land-based range in the world. The facility is administered by the Department of Defence and hosts a wide spectrum of ground, air and space activities for Australian and international government and commercial organisations.
The Woomera Test Facility is supported by Woomera Village which offers comprehensive amenities and services to range users and the local community. Once a secret town closed to the outside world, the village now welcomes visitors wishing to experience the extraordinary history of Woomera.
Explore this website to learn about the diverse test and evaluation capabilities offered by the Woomera Test Facility, and also intriguing local tourism attractions such as the Woomera Heritage Centre and Missile Park. Or simply to learn more about Woomera as a unique Australian Outback town.
Current and past Woomera residents are encouraged to respond to a University of South Australia questionnaire in the 17 October Gibber Gabber concerning Woomera Village’s heritage (refer to details in the accompanying article). Responses are requested by 20 November 2008.
