In the towns centre, Butement Square is a popular rest area for tourists passing through Woomera. Conveniently located close to shopping facilities it is a great place to take a break.
It includes the War Memorial and a 25th anniversary memorial plaque for the Joint Defence Facility Nurrungar (JDFN).
The town centre was developed as Butement Square in the early 1950s and was named after William Alan Stewart Butement who was involved in developing proposed projects and evaluating how the Range should accommodate these.
A.P. Rowe held the chief scientific position in the mission and his deputy was W.A.S Butement who was Assistant Director of Scientific Research at the Ministry of Supply. Although chosen at short notice during a telephone conversation from Paris Butement flourished in Woomera and eventually took charge of the joint Australian and British project.
Early in his career Butement was involved in radar developments and was a quality member of the scientific civil service. His broad scientific knowledge and enthusiasm identified him as a unique and talented member of the scientific community. |
